IN DETAIL

"THEY DON'T MAKE THEM LIKE THEY USED TO"

Au contraire.

It’s not that the ability to make beautiful clothes has declined, it’s that we’ve been taught to expect our clothes to be cheap. And when the price is cut, it’s the making that suffers.

A recent reminder? La Galerie Dior.
Two dresses: one from the 1950s, one a modern recreation. And actually? The new one outshone the original, not because it was flashier, but because it was flawless.
The drape was airy and light. The hem? So finely rolled I had to zoom in with my phone to even see it. It looked effortless, but the craft behind it was anything but.

Ok, we’re not all buying couture Dior. But if you want to invest in something that will last, it helps to know what to look for.

So I made this: A quick guide to...

WHAT'S GOING ON INSIDE A BAUE GARMENT?

And why it matters. Here’s what you’ll find inside a Baue piece:

FRENCH SEAMS

Queen and King of seams. Time-consuming, but worth it. Raw edges are fully encased for a clean, durable finish.

OVERLOCKING

When done right it can be light, fluid, and perfectly neat. I use it to let different fabrics move as one

PIN HEMS

Designed to interrupt the flow of the fabric as little as possible.

TOPSTITCHING

A classic workwear detail, used at Baue for contrast. Sometimes it adds strength. Sometimes I just like the look

When you know what to look for, you start to realise:
great making isn’t a thing of the past.
Thanks for unpicking this with me,

If you found this helpful, why not share it with a friend?
The more we all understand about good quality make the more we support the brands that are making clothes that will last.
